Berlin Ballpoint Pen — Grenadilla Wood

The Berlin ballpoint in Grenadilla — a dense, heavy African tonewood from the Dalbergia genus, favored for wind instruments and long considered a standard in fine goods. Dark, close-grained, and substantial in the hand. Fitted with a chrome-plated brass push device and tip. The wood's weight gives the pen a composed presence that most writing instruments don't have.

Jean-Frédéric Fesseler turns his by hand in a Berlin atelier he shares with his father, a furniture restorer and his first teacher. Each piece passes through more than a hundred steps and emerges singular, hand-turned from fine woods — Grenadilla, Finnish birch — fitted to precision mechanisms so that function and grain hold in accord. His signature lies in the finishing: drawing out the color and depth each wood has developed over the years.
