Ceramic Footed Plate

Handmade by Tetsuya Otani, JP, c. 2026.

A porcelain plate in soft white, thrown by hand and finished to a matte, unadorned surface. The pedestal foot follows the takatsuki (高杯) tradition of the Japanese footed offering plate — the object lifted slightly proud of the table. Sized for a single considered plating: a slice of strawberry shortcake,a course of tapas, a small board of cheese, a wagashi at the close of tea. The form is refined to its essential shape.

Tetsuya Otani's porcelain is made for the present. Each vessel arrives with a soft white surface and a form refined to its bare skeleton. Time enters through use — the meal served, the coffee poured, the flowers arranged, the daily handling — rather than the maker's direction. Trained as an industrial designer before turning to clay, Otani approaches ceramics through the act of subtraction. He calls it denationalization: refining away the signifiers and declarations that mark a vessel's origin.

Trained as an industrial designer before turning to clay, Otani approaches ceramics through the act of subtraction. From his studio in Shigaraki, he turns vessels on the wheel without leaving the hand-trace typically valued in Japanese craft. He calls it denationalization: refining away the signifiers and declarations that mark a vessel's origin. This is design thinking in clay — made for a present, which is always becoming.
