Ceramic Mug

A porcelain mug in soft white, thrown by hand and finished to a matte, unadorned surface. The handle sits close to the body, the wall thins toward the rim, and the vessel holds its warmth without weight. Made for coffee, tea, or whatever the morning calls for.

Tetsuya Otani's porcelain is made for the present. Each vessel arrives with a soft white surface and a form refined to its bare skeleton. Time enters through use — the meal served, the coffee poured, the flowers arranged, the daily handling — rather than the maker's direction. Trained as an industrial designer before turning to clay, Otani approaches ceramics through the act of subtraction. He calls it denationalization: refining away the signifiers and declarations that mark a vessel's origin.

Trained as an industrial designer before turning to clay, Otani approaches ceramics through the act of subtraction. He calls it denationalization: refining away the signifiers and declarations that mark a vessel's origin. This is design thinking in clay — made for a present, which is always becoming.
