Ceramic Tea Cup & Saucer

A porcelain tea cup and saucer in soft white, thrown by hand and finished to a matte, unadorned surface. The cup rests on a shallow saucer, the two pieces sized to a single serving of tea or espresso. Form follows use; nothing else is asked of it.

Tetsuya Otani's porcelain is made for the present. Each vessel arrives with a soft white surface and a form refined to its bare skeleton. Time enters through use — the meal served, the coffee poured, the flowers arranged, the daily handling — rather than the maker's direction. Trained as an industrial designer before turning to clay, Otani approaches ceramics through the act of subtraction. He calls it denationalization: refining away the signifiers and declarations that mark a vessel's origin.

He calls it denationalization: refining away the signifiers and declarations that mark a vessel's origin. This is design thinking in clay — made for a present, which is always becoming.
