With “Kurayami,” Japanese photographer Masao Yamamoto and musician Akira Uchida deepen the dialogue begun with their collaborative photobook “Sasanami” in 2020.
In “Kurayami” (lit. “darkness”), Yamamoto lets his visual language unfold over two chapters (“Side A” and “Side B”). With darkness always an element, his pictures engage themes of nature and essence, always loaded with a sense of mystery and latent danger. Light and darkness feature as main subjects or as mere tools, as single elements among many or as oppressive presences.
Like their previous collaboration, Yamamoto’s photographs and Uchida’s music are meant to be experienced simultaneously—the music adding to the images, the images adding to the music.
