Handcrafted by Friesland Melitta, DE, c. 1980s
An icon of sculptural tableware, this rare vintage tea set was designed by visionary German designer Luigi Colani for Friesland in the 1980s. Known for his “biodesign” philosophy, Colani brought his signature aerodynamic curves and organic forms to this 23-piece service, including a double-spouted teapot perched on a cradle-like stand with integrated warmer, six knob-handled cups with matching saucers and plates, as well as a creamer and a sugar bowl. The teapot’s rubber-lined cradle allows for a gentle swivel to pour from either side—an elegant solution where form and function coalesce.
Finished in a rich midnight blue glaze that shifts subtly under light, the set channels Eastern composure with modernist fluidity. The teapot handle evokes the flow of calligraphy, while the arched base recalls tree branches, reinforcing Colani’s intent to bring nature’s logic into daily rituals. A collector’s find in excellent condition, signed and stamped.
