Handcrafted by Nanbu Tekki Artist, JP, c. 1890s
An exceptional example of Meiji-era Nanbu Tekki craftsmanship, this cast iron teapot features the distinctive oni arare pattern—an array of raised studs resembling scattered hailstones. The deeply textured surface amplifies its presence, while the three-arched handle and durian-shaped form lend it a commanding silhouette rooted in tradition. Signed on the base with “Nanbu 鉠作,” this tetsubin was forged using fine sand-casting and iron-sand techniques native to the Iwate region. The surface has aged gracefully, with only subtle traces of time, preserving the rich patina and integrity of the original form.
