Handcrafted by Shōdō Sasaki, JP, c. 1960s
A rare set of five tin cup holders crafted by Sasaki, whose work blends architectural motifs with utilitarian form. Drawing inspiration from onigawara—traditional demon-faced tiles used on temple rooftops—these coasters reinterpret the protective symbolism of Japanese folklore through a tactile and graphic vocabulary. Functionally, they are also practical as cooking and dining utensil rests.
Sasaki’s practice offers a nuanced record of postwar material culture in Japan, reflecting the interplay between decorative heritage and functional craftsmanship. Preserved in excellent condition, the set stands as a quiet archival trace of artisanal memory.
