Split-Weave Tea Mat - Black

A tea ceremony mat in the split-weave (裂织) tradition, one of Guizhou's oldest textile techniques. Strips of worn cloth are torn by hand and rewoven on the loom, producing a fabric of paired threads set in a soft checkered grid. The mat is sized for a single tea setting — kettle, pot, and cup.

Mengji Nongga — a Guizhou dialect meaning "come home for dinner" — reimagines fragments of worn cloth into tactile forms of continuity. Led by artist He Yan'er, women in the Miao villages of Guizhou braid, stitch, and weave each piece by hand.

Using offcuts softened by time, women in the Miao villages of Guizhou braid, stitch, and weave each piece by hand. The resulting fabrics carry warmth and are designed for living: table runners, cushions, and cloths that gather memory through repeated use.

Led by artist He Yan'er, Mengji Nongga draws a line from ancestral making to contemporary design. From the green fields of Guizhou to homes across the world, these works carry an intimate call: toward home, rhythm, and a way of mindful living.
