Re-contextualized by Zifeng Liu, CH, c. 2026.
A mold-cast ceramic architectural tile, its face depicts taotie — the beast mask that has appeared on Chinese bronzes, buildings, and ritual objects for three thousand years. This piece came from a wall. The surface is in original condition, set on a layered stone base.
Zifeng Liu works with antique fragments that have passed through other lives before reaching the desk. His interventions are minimal — cleaning, stabilizing, fitting a base — leaving the history of each component legible. His work collapses time across dynasties and disciplines, inviting a deeper encounter with imperfection, rarity, and aged materials.
