Designed by Timo Sarpaneva, Iittala, FI, c. 1955.
Signed #55. The Orkidea — Orchid — won the Grand Prix at the Triennale di Milano in 1954 and was named Most Beautiful Object of the Year by House Beautiful the same season. This piece is dated 1955, placing it among the earliest production pieces made immediately after the award; later runs carried only a serial number. The form is Sarpaneva at his most direct: a column of clear glass drawn upward and folded open at the crown, the material appearing to have arrested mid-movement. Large and substantial in the hand at 2.3 kilos, it carries the weight of an object that was always meant to be both sculpture and vessel. Excellent vintage condition.
Sold individually.
