Each brush-applied black-and-white segment conforms to the narrowing curvature with precision, requiring exceptional control over both proportion and rhythm. The resulting surface, both optical and tactile, highlights the quiet discipline behind Dong Dan’s pursuit of form and glaze.

Named for Xuan (玄), a classical Chinese term signifying the profound, the unknowable, and the darkly luminous, the piece reflects Dong Dan’s interest in quiet spatial tension and subtle contrasts. A practitioner of Jizhou kiln techniques and glaze experimentation, he reinterprets Song Dynasty traditions through pared-back silhouettes and visual rhythm.
