A contemporary interpretation of the Song Dynasty’s famed “skyful of stars” pattern, this teapot features white speckles meticulously dotted across Dong Dan’s signature surface. Its curvature, developed through a meticulous and ongoing process, creates a tension between fullness and restraint. The black glaze—hovering between matte and gloss—anchors the visual rhythm while allowing the light to shift subtly across the form.

Named for Xuan, a classical Chinese term signifying the profound, the unknowable, and the darkly luminous, the piece reflects Dong Dan’s interest in quiet spatial tension and subtle contrasts. A practitioner of Jizhou kiln techniques and glaze experimentation, he reinterprets Song Dynasty traditions through pared-back silhouettes and visual rhythm.
