This teapot captures Dong Dan’s meditative process in both form and gesture. Its refined curvature and signature Xuan glaze—balanced between matte and gloss—anchor a single circular brushstroke at the center, reminiscent of calligraphy’s pursuit of unity and void. The brushwork suggests a continuous movement of thought, aligning with Dong’s belief that creation is an act of dialogue between control and release.

Named for Xuan, a classical Chinese term signifying the profound, the unknowable, and the darkly luminous, the piece reflects Dong Dan’s interest in quiet spatial tension and subtle contrasts. A practitioner of Jizhou kiln techniques and glaze experimentation, he reinterprets Song Dynasty traditions through pared-back silhouettes and visual rhythm.
